EMMA C. BERRY SLOOP WELL
SMACK . . .
Built in Noank, CT. in 1866, this type of vessel was
known as a "Noank Smack." She contained a live well which is a watertight
structure built into the vessel. Within the well numerous holes are drilled in
the bottom to allow fresh (oxygenerated) seawater to circulate throughout.
This enabled fishermen to transport live fish and lobsters from the
fishing grounds to market. The Emma C. Berry was the last one of her type
in existence. Kit: Plank on frame construction, 1-32 scale. Using beech
and basswood for strips; the keel and ribs are just some of the parts that are
laser cut. Deadeyes and blocks are of walnut. Includes over 50 yards
of black and gray standing rigging. Intermediate level. Hull

She captured over a million dollars worth of British goods on her first cruise, establishing a reputation as a formidable vessel. The British ordered her captured at any cost. She was seized by the 44-gun H.M.S. Assurance in 1783, sent to England and taken into the Royal Navy. She was sold out of service in 1786. Plank-on-bulkhead construction. High quality basswood strips, 10 brass cannon on wooden carriages. True to scale Britannia metal, brass hardwood fittings, four diameters each of black stand and white running rigging.
