Carronade guns were
short, large caliber weapons on light carriages. They used a relatively
small charge and thus had less recoil, as well as a much shorter range
than "long" guns of the same caliber. They were used to fire into the
enemy's rigging at short ranges, or to sweep the decks before a boarding
attempt.
